The Swan View Community Garden, at the local Uniting Church, was one of two recipients of a community grant in the Open Garden Scheme, being awarded the grant for Best Community Garden. The Swan View Community Garden is much more than just a garden. Collaborating with WA Disability Services, the garden helps people with disabilities engage with the community, build skills and develop speech and motor skills through three separate groups. From all of this activity, the garden produces plenty of harvest, which gets distributed amongst the helpers, the church community and an emergency relief food program in the area. The grant, of 2000, has gone to building a new gazebo. Rosemary Smith, secretary of the Swan View Community Garden was thrilled with the grant. “We were quite lucky to be selected because they are quite sought after,” she said.
