UnitingWorld’s Lent Event provides opportunities for people of all ages to – as their motto says – connect, reflect and act. Connect with overseas communities; reflect on your faith and act, by giving up everyday items and donating the money to vital relief and development projects instead.
This year Lent Event includes a new, youth-inspired addition – Give it UP for Lent. Running over one weekend from March 7–9, Give it UP for Lent is the result of collaboration between UnitingWorld and South Australia’s Uniting Young People. It includes a full range of youth group resources, video and bible study materials.
“Younger people can be a bit more creative with what they give up because we’re focussing the time frame for them on a single weekend – they might choose to give up their bed, footwear, cutlery or technology,” says Lent Event Co-ordinator, Fiona Johnson. “We’ve prepared some studies that help them think through what Lent is all about as well as how our excessive consumption contributes to a world of poverty.”
Children’s resources for Lent Event this year are also available.
All the funds raised from Lent Event directly support education, health and livelihood projects. From North India to South Sudan, from Maluku to Kiribati, more children are in school, more mothers and babies lives are being saved and more women are being given the opportunity to earn an income and support their families.
