Standing together to save Beeliar wetlands

The Roe 8 highway extension has been a controversial issue amongst the local community in Cockburn and surrounding areas for a number of years. The State Government of Western Australia has proposed to extend Roe highway from Kwinana Freeway through the Beeliar Wetlands including around Bibra Lake, in an aim to ease transport for trucks heading to the Fremantle port.

The community, including the City of Cockburn, has shown massive support for the ‘Rethink the Link’ campaign, which opposes the State Government’s proposal and offers an alternative. Supporters of the campaign have recently had success, as plans for construction have been stalled due to the Environmental Protection Authority’s assessment of the area being deemed invalid by the Supreme Court. The State Government of WA have recently announced that they will appeal this decision, meaning the fight is not over yet.

Rev Sealin Garlett, minister at Coolbellup Uniting Church, is well established and respected in the City of Cockburn, and is also a member of the city’s Aboriginal Reference Group. Much of the community campaign against the highway extension has been out of concern for the local ecosystem, which will be hugely impacted under the proposal. Sealin also adds to this conversation that the area is culturally significant for Nyungar people.

Passing the Baton: be inspired

Passing the Baton is a training day and expo for people working in children’s ministry. It is a chance to be inspired in ministry, network with others in the field and learn about new resources relevant to the role. It’s a great way to be refreshed and to renew a commitment to children’s ministry and is suitable for anyone involved with Sunday school, kids clubs, YouthCARE, family camps, holiday programs or children’s outreach services.

Tammy Tolman will be the keynote speaker at Passing the Baton this year. She has been training children’s ministry leaders for around 20 years around the world and has also written training modules and a range of worship music.

Let them stay

The moderator of the Uniting Church WA, Rev Steve Francis has today written to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull requesting that he act urgently to protect the children in immigration detention who are at risk of being deported to Nauru.

“The Uniting Church in Australia Synod of Western Australia has grave concerns for the safety of children in the care of the Immigration Department, following the High Court decision today 03/02/2016,” Steve said.

“We have a long standing concern that asylum seekers and refugees are treated with compassion and in accordance with international law, as can be seen by resolutions made by our Synod over many years.  We are aware that there are two families in WA who might be at risk of removal to Nauru as a result of this judgement.

“We note that The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has today issued a press release which “affirms that today’s High Court decision does not alter Australia’s international obligations towards people seeking asylum.”

A welcome national approach on redress

The president of the Uniting Church in Australia, Stuart McMillan, has welcomed the commitment by the Federal Government to develop a national approach to redress for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse.

“This commitment by the Government is important, because a nationally consistent approach has been identified as best meeting the needs of survivors,” said Stuart.

“The Royal Commission recommended a single national redress scheme and it’s a principle that we strongly support.”

“The Government previously thought a single national scheme was too complex and difficult to resource, so we acknowledge and thank the Government for its principled change of position towards a national approach.”
