What do you get if you combine 41 adults, 19 children, fun, sun, sand, activities, a campfire, and lots of conversation? The recent combined Star Street and Maylands – Mt Lawley Uniting Church Camp!
From Friday 10 to Sunday 12 August, members of Victoria Park and Districts Star Street and Maylands-Mt Lawley Uniting Churches braved the Kwinana Freeway in peak hour and chilly nights in dorms to come together for a weekend of fun, faith discussion and fellowship at the Alfred Hines Children’s Seaside Camp in Rockingham.
The camp aimed to provide a safe and relaxed atmosphere for participants, who range from toddlers to retirees, to enjoy a mix of activities and free time. Congregation members and friends were welcome to attend all or part of the camp, with those who need the comfort of their own bed able to visit during the day.
It was the second year in a row that the two congregations joined forces to hold a camp. As per the year before, campers enjoyed get to know you games, Bible study, a sandcastle competition, craft, jigsaws and board games, singing, a shared communion service, and delicious food. This year, the theme of the camp was ‘In God’s Image’, with campers exploring material about God’s Creation, prepared by Rev Kim Francis, minister at Maylands-Mt Lawley Uniting Church. Another special feature for this year’s camp was a skit evening, showcasing the acting – and overacting – skills of participants.
Having a combined camp with two congregations takes away some of the financial pressure and provides an opportunity to get to know new people. The flexible program aims to provide a choice of activities for different participants. Most importantly, the camp provides a space where people can get to know each other better and talk about their faith.
With God’s help, the combined church camp will be able to continue and thrive for many years to come.
