Every day, we are in a position to create peace in our lives and for the people around us. If you need some positive ways to promote peace, Elsa Samuel recommends these sites.

Creating a peaceful mind is critical to creating a peaceful society. The Dalai Lama once said “we can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” Peace begins with a stress-free mind, and meditation is a potent way to cleanse your system of stress. After trying a few different meditation apps, I found Insight Timer to be an excellent choice. Its wide variety of guided meditations are easy to follow. The popular app features more than 11 974 guided meditations and you can browse the list of meditations based on topic, practice, time length and even teacher. If you prefer a quieter meditation, you can set a timer and meditate to intermittent bells or calming ambient noise.

Something we can all do to promote peace is practice random acts of kindness. To quote Scott Adams, “there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” Recent research suggests kindness may improve resiliency by promoting feelings of happiness and peace. Even thinking and talking about kindness can improve those feelings. For heaps of random kindness act ideas, I recommend this site, brimming with clever ideas on spreading kindness. Click on ‘Get Inspired’ for ideas, free posters, calendars, videos and stories. I recommend isiting the Kind Blog too, I took lots of tips from the ‘50 Kindness Ideas for Random Acts of Kindness Day’ post.

For some local peacemaking, check out the Uniting Church WA’s Social Justice Unit. The team actively hosts a wide range of talks, fundraisers and community events such as the Palm Sunday Walk for Justice. They even help you to rally for causes through its Social Justice Action Groups. Their events are designed to promote awareness and seek change where it’s needed. The next big peace event is ‘Making Peace: The practice of peace in today’s world’, to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. This conference will inspire, equip and challenge you to make peace in your community.
