Connecting faith through Christian meditation

Rev Rodney Marsh, Chaplain at Great Southern Grammar in Albany, is inviting people to take part in a six week online course in meditation.

“The various forms of mindfulness or meditation are, I think, the only way to teach your brain to pay attention to the present moment. Meditation is not an extra thing to do to relax you, maintain balance or reduce stress – though it will still do these things – it is a way of being and connecting the prayer of Jesus in your heart. Meditation is not what you think,” said Rodney.

“Besides being an ancient and universal spiritual wisdom, found in all religions and cultures, it has been discovered by modern secularists and taught in the form of mindfulness. Meditation is, I believe, the only antidote to the tyranny of ‘thinking’ and ‘distraction’ which comes with living in our modern digitised world.”

Rodney believes the only way to receive the benefits of meditation is to actually do it, and is encouraging those interested to take part. The course is based on a method used by the Worldwide Community for Christian Meditation.

Online classes will be held on Wednesday mornings, 6.30 to 7.00am, beginning on 15 May and running for six weeks. Each class will include a ten minute introduction and 20 minutes of guided meditation.

Participants are also asked to practice twice daily for the duration of the course, reflecting on the experience at the end of the six weeks. At the end of the course, the group may continue as an open weekly practice, depending on the wishes of those participating.
