Meeting costs in the aged care environment

Being acutely aware of the challenges faced by providers of age care services, it is abundantly clear that most people are completely unprepared for the move into such facilities from both a personal and financial perspective. In this article we explore the challenge of funding aged care with the view to getting people thinking about it now rather than waiting until the move is imminent.

There are already over one million retirees accessing aged care services in Australia. The move to aged care for a family member can be a very difficult process as the increasing cost structure raises questions as to the funding mechanism especially as the individual typically has strong ties to the family home. The costs of residential aged care are multifaceted and generally involve one or more of the following fees:

Juniper responds to care needs in the Kimberley

Juniper, a Uniting Church WA agency providing community and residential aged care, is continuing a long tradition of the Uniting Church and its predecessors, by providing much needed services to remote Australia.

This tradition has been celebrated through the work of Rev John Flynn who set out to establish a network of support to sustain communities in the outback. His work led to the formation of the Australian Inland Mission and its successor, Frontier Services and the world’s first aerial services to remote communities, the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Juniper’s history commenced in 1949 when it welcomed its first residents to a converted Edwardian house in Mt Lawley bequeathed by the pioneering Sarah Hardey.

In the subsequent 67 years, and after an emotional decision for Frontier Services to change direction, Juniper has grown its services to meet the needs of an ageing society.

Its services now extend from Wyndham in the Kimberley, to Albany in the Great Southern.

Taking time to stop, listen and learn

During the course of 2015, Belinda Oxenburgh, Dorothy White and Karen Honeybun, embarked on a journey of discovery.

As a student at St Stephen’s School, a Uniting Church school, Belinda took part in The Rite Journey Program and chose Karen, her youth group leader at Trinity North Uniting Church, as her mentor. Part of the program involves a yearlong project, which Belinda chose to share with Dorothy – a member of the congregation, now in her 90s.

Belinda and Karen met regularly with Dorothy and had the privilege of listening to, and getting to know, a dearly loved member of their congregation. Dorothy’s sweet temperament, attentiveness and kindness struck Belinda in their first conversation.

Filling a need in Gingin

There are many benefits in living in the country, but at Gingin Uniting Church, we have become aware of a looming major community problem: Alzheimer’s and a lack of services and carer  support. After some input from Rev Dr Bill Jenkins at our 5th Sunday combined churches service, we decided to take it further and offer a full-day free seminar run by Alzheimer’s Australia  WA, as a community service activity. Bill is a Uniting Church minister and a psychologist who has conducted research into dementia.

There was much interest and thanks before the event, and leading up to it we have discovered several community members who have both training and/or experience with Alzheimer’s care, as  well as families already struggling to cope.

Creating vision at the Crossroads

Wanneroo Crossways Uniting Church lies close to a major crossing of roads. The congregation has also been at something of a crossroads in its life over the last year. Quietly urged on by  members, it has now completed a planning process which has been suitably labelled ‘Towards a 2020 Vision’. The crux of the action was led by Rev David Kriel, mission planner at the Uniting  Church WA.

Members are now focussing on the set goals and are in the process of setting in place suitable actions and time-lines, as well as calling members to serve Christ and the gospel with the skills.

May the Holy Spirit grant Crossways the strength, guidance and wisdom to enable their reach to be bigger than our grasp.
