Uniting Church mourns passing

The Uniting Church in Australia is saddened to announce the death of the late Rev Ian Tanner who passed away Friday 27 December 2013.

Ian was a past President of the Uniting Church in Australia Assembly from 1985 to 1988 and served as the first Moderator of the Synod of South Australia from 1977-1979.

Rev Prof Andrew Dutney, president of the Uniting Church in Australia,  praised and remembered the service of Ian.

“Rev Tanner devoted his life to ministry within the Uniting Church and we are thankful for his years of service. He was an inspiring leader who had a significant impact on the early life of the church.”

“Our prayers are with Ian’s family and friends as they mourn his passing.”

Dr Deidre Palmer also praised the contribution of Ian in a pastoral note to members of the Uniting Church in South Australia.

“We are grateful to God for Ian’s ministry among us. Ian was a wise mentor and faithful servant of Christ.”

Ian’s other placements included acting as Director of Lay Education and as a minister at Scots Church, Adelaide.

A public service of thanksgiving was held in late January in Canberra.
