Riding the waves in God’s creation: Tom Broadbent

Like many young adults who’ve recently finished school, Tom Broadbent is figuring out where he wants to head in life. There are three things he knows for sure he wants in that journey though: travel, surfing and Christ.

From his hometown of Busselton WA, Tom spent 2020 merging these three passions – with some limitations to the ‘travel’ part – through a yearlong diploma in leadership through Christian Surfers Australia and Alphacrusis College, based in Sydney. In what could be described as a ‘gap year’, has been a chance for Tom to build his leadership skills, share the gospel and live in the present on some of the world’s best beaches.

End of year celebration with intergenerational worship

The Commission for Education for Discipleship and Leadership (CEDAL) held their End of Year Celebration last week at South Perth Uniting Church.

Rev Dr Anne Wright, Director of Education and Formation for the Uniting Church WA, said that due to an increase in students and candidates for ministry in the Presbytery of WA, this year’s celebration service was held a little differently to usual, with a café style worship.

Explore Creative Worship this Summer Spirit

Summer Spirit is back in 2021, with a focus on Creative Worship.

Summer Spirit is a two-day formation event for members and leaders of the Uniting Church WA, organised by the Commission for Education for Discipleship and Leadership (CEDAL).

Next year’s event will be held from Friday 19 to Saturday 20 February at All Saints Floreat Uniting Church.

Uniting Church says State Climate Policy is a missed opportunity that leaves WA falling behind

Susy Thomas, Moderator of the Uniting Church WA, today expressed her disappointment at the lack of action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the WA State Climate Policy released this week.

“There are lots of promising project announcements collated here, many of which are welcome starting points, but what we are really looking for in a State Climate Policy are concrete parameters and an overarching plan for how to transition our economy and reduce emissions,” she said.

Christmas Bowl: A light of hope in the darkness

Although Christmas may be different for many of us in this year of pandemic, churches across Australia are joining together once more to share God’s love with our brothers and sisters in need around the world through the Christmas Bowl.

“This year, the coronavirus has changed life for all of us but for vulnerable communities who are already struggling as a result of conflict and disaster, the effects of this crisis are catastrophic,” said said Hannah Montgomery, from Act for Peace, the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia.

Moderator’s Morning Tea: Encouraging one another and working together

This year’s Moderator’s Morning Tea was held on Thursday 19 November at Trinity Residential College, giving Susy Thomas, Moderator of the Uniting Church WA, a chance to thank leaders of the Uniting Church WA family for the work they do, as well as providing them an opportunity to come together and share their experiences and hopes.

Amanda Hunt, CEO of Uniting WA, Melanie Kiely, CEO of Good Sammy Enterprises, and Dr Alec O’Connell, Headmaster of Scotch College were the guest speakers who shared on the theme of ‘Encouraging one another and working together.’

Candlelight Vigil at Parliament: Faith groups join together to pray for the planet

Members from Perth’s Muslim, Buddhist, Bahá’í, Catholic and other Christian communities gathered last night to pray and meditate for a safe climate future.

The group, from the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change, believe that WA has an important role to play in reducing Australia’s impact on the climate.

“If necessary, use words”: Induction service at Northway Uniting Church

Rev Dr Sonny Rajamoney was Inducted into Northway Uniting Church, in Beldon, on Sunday 8 November.

Susy Thomas, Moderator of the Uniting Church WA, delivered the Proclamation of the Word.

Sonny responded to his Induction and thanked the Presbytery of WA, members of the congregation, and his family for supporting his call to ministry at Northway Uniting Church. He said he is inspired to minister with the church in a new world.

Creating jobs and safer social housing with energy efficient upgrades

The Uniting Church WA Social Justice Unit has teamed up with the Uniting Church Vic Tas, urging people to write to their local MPs asking for a greater investment in housing energy efficiency upgrades for social housing and low-income households.

The Uniting Church in Australia and the Uniting Church WA have always held particular concerns about the most vulnerable in our community, as well as minimising impacts on the environment. A simple way to address both of these concerns is by ensuring that people in social housing can reduce their electricity and gas costs through the provision of energy-efficient housing design, materials and appliances.

Review: Metanoia

A Memoir of a body, born again, by Anna McGahan, Bible Society Australia, 2019

Anna McGahan’s book, Metanoia, is a gift to Australia and the Australian church.

The first recorded words of Jesus’ ministry included the command to ‘turn’, ‘change’ or ‘repent’. The Greek noun for this is ‘metanoia’. In her book, Anna tells of her own metanioa – a transformative change of heart. Her story is raw, engaging, exciting, true and above all, real.

Anna tells us how she arrived at “the safest place” and “the most dangerous place” she has ever been. She tells not only of the pain of sickness, loneliness, alienation, relationship breakdowns, missteps and of the right and wrong choices in her life, but also of her story of commitment, empathy, love, and her yearning for, and finding, ‘something more’.

Anna tells of how she eventually heard and responded to the Spirit’s gentle call. Anna learned to trust Jesus, and was, like all of us, loved into the discovery of the peace, joy and hope for which she was made.
