Rev Roy Surjanegara is the Minister at GKI Perth Uniting Church, an Indonesian speaking congregation in Mosmon Park. This edition, he writes about this year’s Family and Culture Month at their church.

September is the month to celebrate family life and Indonesian culture for GKI Perth Uniting Church. We call it ‘Family and Culture Month’. Each Sunday, one ethnic group is highlighted in the service through the use of the local languages for the Bible readings, songs, and prayers. Musical instruments, clothing, decorations, and traditional food also play an important part in creating the atmosphere of being in Indonesia for a day. This year, we celebrated the Batak culture of Sumatera, the Sunda culture of West Java, the Dayak culture of Borneo, and the Tionghoa culture of Indonesian-Chinese descendants.

No mistakes in Creative Endeavour

In the bushy surrounds of Perth’s hills, a Uniting Church congregation is bringing life to the community through art and creativity. Kalamunda Uniting Church’s Creative Endeavour program is reaching people in ways the congregation could not have initially expected.

“It’s all about the journey,” Elizabeth Bishop, founder and leader of Creative Endeavour, tells me. And what a journey it is.

There are many ways to appreciate art; but for those who are using artistic creativity for personal enjoyment, it’s the process – the journey – that often leads us to new places.

Celebrating history at Northcliffe

Northcliffe Uniting Church recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of their church building. On Sunday 22 September, guests attended a special worship and lunch to mark the occasion. Naomi Backhouse, member of Northcliffe Uniting Church, presented this history of the church, and shared it with Revive.

When I die

In the last edition of Revive, we printed an opinion piece submitted by Rev Ken Devereux, Uniting Church Chaplain at Royal Perth Hospital, supporting the drafting of a Parliamentary bill for Voluntary Assisted Dying. Premier Mark McGowan introduced a Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill to the Parliament in August this year.

This edition, Prof Brian Hill, member at Billabong Uniting Church, responds to the current conversation.

Stack of stamps raise funds for Frontier Services

One Sunday afternoon our front doorbell rang, and in came Kelvin Woodward, Treasurer of our congregation, Kardinya Uniting Church.

“Hi Betty,” he said. “Are you still collecting used stamps?”

“Yes,” I replied, “For Frontier Services!”

When Kelvin said he had a few boxes for us, I gestured with my hands a box the size of a shoe box.

“No,” Kelvin said, spreading his arms wide to indicate a very large box.

Working together to support international partnerships

The Uniting Church WA has a number of positive international partnerships that congregations and individuals can support through the International Partnership and Development Commission – formally known as the UnitingWorld WA Commission. One of these partnerships is with the Methodist Church of Sri Lanka; the Uniting Church WA has currently agreed to help financially support their ‘Interfaith Preschool Project’.

South Perth Uniting Church and Wesley College recently teamed up to hold a Bollywood Dinner raising funds for this goal – building a partnership, not only with the Methodist Church of Sri Lanka, but with each other. Ten Wesley College students participated on the night, welcoming guests, serving food, clearing tables and selling raffle tickets. The school also provided the venue and decorated it in stunning Bollywood style.

St Andrew’s breathes new life into East Perth

Members of St Andrew’s Uniting Church have well and truly settled into their new home in East Perth, with new life blooming and exciting projects on the horizon.

A dedication service for their new Bennet St building was held in June, with a dedication also being made for the Rev James Reid Memorial Room. James Reid was a minister at St Andrew’s Uniting Church in Perth’s CBD from 1959 to 1971.

On Saturday 19 October, the congregation are holding their first major event, the East Perth Urban Village Festival, in Wellington Square. The festival will bring businesses and services in the community together with family friendly activities such as camel rides, a drumming circle, giant games, as well as food and information stalls.

Scotch students experience Church in the City

It was an unusual sight, 350 boys from Scotch College Middle School pouring into Uniting Church in the City (UCIC) Wesley Perth on a wet and blustery morning in the CBD. The Year 7 and 8 boys were experiencing ‘Church in the City’ – a special excursion to get a better understanding of the heritage and identity of Scotch College as a school of the Uniting Church in Australia.

God’s guidance for the journey

Melville Uniting Church has decided to close as a congregation, and held its final service on Sunday 23 June 2019. The Korean Presbyterian Church, who has been meeting at the premises for 20 years, sung a moving hymn to open the service, which was attended by more than 120 people. During worship, Jean Mackenzie delivered this address on behalf of the congregation.
