A light on every street

Mother Teresa of Kolkata is quoted as saying: “None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can something wonderful.”

Although we often think it’s the bigger stuff that makes the real difference, the evidence indicates it’s the small things that together make up the substance of all we hope for. With this in mind ‘A light on every street’ has been developed to enable us to step out in a small but significant way to share something of the Good News of the hope our faith has to offer.

WA’s first same sex church wedding

Wendy and Nicole Hendry have finally been married – by the church they love.

Eleven years ago the couple celebrated a commitment ceremony, and have now legally been wed within the church.

Uniting Church Minister, Rev Elenie Poulos conducted the wedding of Wendy and Nicole, regular attendees of Margaret River Uniting Church, on Saturday 27 October.  This was the first wedding between two people of the same-sex to be officially performed by a church in Western Australia.

At its national decision making meeting held in July, the Uniting Church in Australia decided to hold two equal and distinct statements of belief on marriage to honour the diversity of Christian belief among Uniting Church members. Since then, the church has published an additional marriage liturgy that will allow same-gender couples to get married in Uniting Churches, for those congregations that choose to host them.

Kairos: reaching out to those impacted by the justice system

Kairos Prison Ministry Australia is an interdenominational International Christian ministry reaching out to incarcerated individuals, their families and those who work with them; to bring sustainable meaning and Christian hope in the place of loneliness, isolation and despair.

Kairos Inside is a three to five day short course run in the prisons and Kairos Outside is a weekend (free of charge to guests) for women who have been impacted by the justice system, including having had or still has a member of the family in prison.  The team provides a safe environment over a weekend where guests are given an opportunity to interact with other families without shame or judgement.

Tongan thank you

Two years ago Scarborough Uniting Church welcomed into its church family Sione and Ana Lea’aetoa and their three children, Silesa, Susana and Lemoto.

The April 2018 issue of Revive told the story of Sione’s journey towards ordained ministry. Ana is also going through a Period of Discernment this year.

Ana’s father, Rev Beni Lalahi, is a minister in Tonga. The ministry he is undertaking focuses on vulnerable families, elderly people and prison ministry. Scarborough Uniting Church, through Ana, is supporting the children in his church with prayers and gifts.

All we have in common

Doesn’t matter where you are in the world, there’s something about Swedish blondes in flares. The moment I find ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ in my playlist, smiles light the faces of my four young companions and for a brief moment during the chorus, we’re in perfect sync. At the other end of the clinic, our photographer and videographer bust a few moves in between the serious business of filming the testimony of clinic manager Albert, who has limited English and dreams of a blood pressure machine for his patients.

A holy place

The sun was shining, a gentle breeze waved through the trees and birds pranced around, busy making nests among the branches overhead. It was the perfect Spring day for the St Stephen’s School Carramar community to bless their new Bush Chapel – a space for all to reflect, set amongst the flora and fauna of the nature play space.

“You could really tell that God was amongst us on this beautiful day,” Donella Beare, St Stephen’s School Principal, said.
