The hands and feet of Jesus

Upon the retirement of Robert Watson late last year, UnitingCare West put the call out for the next suitable candidate to fill this unique role. Rev Daniel Viljoen has answered that call.

The role of mission development officer at UnitingCare West is a specific one, designed to continue and grow the existing relationships between the organisation, its staff and volunteers, as well  as members and groups of the Uniting Church. UnitingCare West, an agency of the Uniting Church WA, is one of the state’s largest providers of community services, offering professional care,  love and support in a range of areas.

Daniel and his family moved to Australia from South Africa around ten years ago. After completing compulsory military service in 1993 with the South African Defence Force, Daniel decided his calling was as a military chaplain with the Dutch Reformed Church. In 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa, after being elected in the nation’s first democratic election. Working for the military throughout the transition to end Apartheid was an interesting time.

“It basically meant that former enemies became colleagues,” said Daniel.

Daniel first worked with a congregation before taking up a position coordinating chaplaincy at Bethanie, an aged care facility of the Churches of Christ. Daniel talks fondly of his previous  positions, as he recalls how they have all guided him on the journey of growth towards his new role at UnitingCare West.

Help is on hand for older residents at home

Older people in Perth’s north eastern and Hills suburbs can gain access to care and support designed to maintain their independence and quality of life at home.

Juniper, part of WA’s UnitingCare network, delivers a full range of home care services that can be an effective option for older people who want to live independently at home but may need assistance.

Juniper community executive manager, Daymon Joseph, said the organisation’s care packages are for people aged 65 and over, or 50-plus for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander clients.

“We understand that support in the home may be a new opportunity for some, so our aim is to help people live their life on their terms,” he said.

UnitingCare Australia responds to the Intergenerational Report

“Today’s release of the Intergenerational Report (IGR) provides an opportunity for us to think about the policy decisions we face. It should focus us on ensuring all Australians can participate and contribute,” said Lin Hatfield Dodds, National Director of UnitingCare Australia.

“The forecasts in the report don’t tell us the future, but they do give us a sense of the significant demographic shifts that are likely to occur. The IGR provides an opportunity for us to make plans now, to ensure we have a reliable safety net and can provide opportunities for people in the future.”

“A strong safety net should not be seen as a barrier to a good future, but as a central plank for a good society now and in the years ahead.”

“With government currently spending more than it collects in revenue it is clear that some changes are needed. We should be giving less government assistance to people who don’t need it and more assistance to those who do.”

“Reform to superannuation will also be important to secure the government’s long-term revenue stream and ensure retired Australians can meet the costs of their ageing.”

UnitingCare welcomes new support for people with severe symptoms of dementia

The Government’s announcement of $54.4 million in funding that will go over four years to a new initiative to support people with severe symptoms of dementia in residential care facilities is very good news,” said Lin Hatfield Dodds, National Director of UnitingCare Australia.

“Our agencies provide the largest share of aged care in the country and we are consistently hearing that the challenges of caring for people with dementia are growing. Additional support to assist residential care providers in meeting this challenge is most welcome.”

Approximately 1 in 4 people aged 85 and over have dementia. With an ageing population it is expected that by 2050 nearly 900,000 Australians will be living with dementia. At the moment, more than half the permanent residents in Government-funded aged care facilities around the country have been diagnosed with dementia.

Juniper salutes Senior Champion of the Year

A woman’s efforts to improve the lives of older Aboriginal people in the State’s far north have secured her WA’s premier seniors award.

Leading aged care and community service provider Juniper congratulated Ms Maureen Angus (62) who won the Juniper 2014 WA Seniors Champion Award on 8 November.

Maureen was elevated from a strong field of several category winners who in this year’s WA Seniors Awards were acknowledged for their service to older people.

From personal experience receiving at-home care Ms Angus knew others in her town could benefit from help, so she established a local community care service at Ardyaloon, a community of about 300 people located 2,446km from Perth on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula.

Corporates clean up at Juniper Rowethorpe

Juniper’s Corporate Volunteers program has enlisted recruits from Bankwest to help give our gardens a welcome spring clean.

A strong team of staff from the company descended on Juniper Rowethorpe in Bentley recently to weed, plant and clean up around the site, much to the residents’ delight.

Juniper’s Volunteer Program Coordinator, Verity Quill, oversees a 500-strong volunteer workforce who help deliver services to thousands of older people throughout Perth and in regional WA.

“Our volunteers undertake many different activities, from office work to home visiting and companionship, driving, gardening, and therapy and activity assistance,” she said.

“Juniper’s volunteers give an invaluable boost to the care we provide to more than 4,000 older Western Australians and without their help many of our services would not be possible.”
